(1-11-25) Jay County EMS squad member, Larry Nickolas, lost his life while on a call.
From Jay County EMS
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a great paramedic, coworker, father and friend. At approximately 8 pm on 1/10/2025, all of us heard those chilling words “Man down, CPR in progress” within our own walls. We deal with death in ways that most people outside of our EMS world would not and could not understand. But to apply our skills to one of our own…there are simply no words to describe our pain and anguish.

Larry Nuckols knew about service. It was who he was. From serving to retirement in the United States Army and 30-plus years in Emergency Medical Services, he leaves a large hole that will never be filled. Everyone who had the pleasure of working with, being acquainted with, or even being treated as a patient of Larry has a story to tell. He always made an impression. At the end of the day, he was more than just an employee. He was our friend, our brother and a person to look up to.
It doesn’t make it any easier, but there is comfort in knowing you were right where you wanted to be, serving your community. Rest easy, my friend. You’ve done your part. We will take it from here; your work is complete. Larry, my friend, you will be sorely missed.

My deepest condolences to your department and his family. As a RN I know first hand the loss you feel with one of your own. The last resuscitation I worked was my dear friend and co-worker.
