(10-24-26) This afternoon, City of Portland Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the distillers grains storage area at POET Biorefining. Additional support was quickly requested from the Pennville Fire Department and Redkey Volunteer FIRE Department for extra manpower and tankers to assist with firefighting efforts.

POET’s on-site dry hydrant allowed firefighters the ablilty to quickly establish a tanker shuttle operation to supply water to Portland’s ladder truck and handlines.

POET employees also worked alongside firefighters, helping move distillers grains out of the storage area to support firefighting operations.

Today’s response is another great example of the teamwork and mutual support shared among fire departments throughout Jay County.

We were also reminded of the important role dry hydrants play in rural communities, helping ensure firefighters have access to the water needed when emergencies arise.

Strong partnerships, community support, and proper resources make a real difference when it matters most. We’re proud to serve alongside such dedicated teams throughout Jay County!
