(9-26-26) The Miami County Board of Elections (BOE) is holding a Special Election for voters to decide on the proposed recall of three seated Piqua City Commissioners and potential successors. The City of Piqua is providing information regarding the county’s process as a courtesy to residents.

Key dates and details regarding the Special Election include:

  • Recall petitions have been submitted and certified for James D. Vetter, Ward 1; William Frederick Walker, Jr., Ward 3; and Frank DeBrosse, Ward 5. The BOE has approved Tuesday, November 3, 2026, for the Special Election, the same day as the General Election.
  • Piqua city residents will complete a second ballot for the Special Election. Voters may choose to vote in one election or both.
  • Ballots for the Special Election will not be available on the same day that absentee voting begins for the General Election. This is due to the 30-day filing deadline for candidates to file petitions to run as successors to the recalled commissioners and the 10-day period for protests. The BOE will post updates on their website and Facebook page when ballots are ready for absentee by mail and early in-person voters.
  • Those voting absentee by mail will need to complete a separate application for the Special Election no later than Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 8:30 p.m.
  • Voters who wish to vote in the early in-person voting center will be required to check in for each election separately. The General Election check-in will be located in the hallway outside the BOE office, 215 W. Main St., Troy. Check-in for the Special Election will be held in the BOE office.
  • On Election Day, the three polling locations in the City of Piqua will be separated for the two separate elections. Voters must check-in for one election and cast their ballot before checking in to the other election. The tabulation equipment will be specific to each election.
  • Election results for the Special Election will not be available until after the BOE completes all statutory requirements for the General Election. Only after the Unofficial Canvass of the General Election is complete will the Board begin to tabulate results for the Special Election.
  • Interested residents of Wards 1, 3 and 5 may file a petition with between 50 and 100 signatures from residents of the respective ward to the Board of Elections by Monday, October 5. The BOE office will remain open until 9:00 p.m. on that date for the statutory voter registration deadline for both the General and Special Elections.
  • Residents will vote on the recall of the City Commissioners as individual questions and will also vote for candidates for the potentially open seats for each individual ward. City of Piqua voters vote for all wards regardless of residency among the wards.
