(5-16-26) Portland, Indiana firefighters responded to  715 W. High St at 12:55 p.m. Friday to find a garage at the rear of a structure fully engulfed. Flames started to overtake the attached house.

Two Portland Fire Department trucks arrived to fight the flames with 19 firefighters. A ladder truck was incorporated to spray the fence at the east side of the property and the home to try to prevent the fire from spreading.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 3 p.m. and put out the Fire by 5:10 p.m.

Diego M. Gonzalez (29) who lives at the same address as where the fire occurred, was arrested Friday for arson, a Level 4 felony. He was being held without bond at Jay County Jail.

Southwest Mercer Fire District from Fort Recovery also assisted at the scene.

Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has an ongoing investigation into the incident.
