Scott R. Moorehead

(Fort Wayne, IN)- (1-13-23) Yesterday evening at approximately 6:40pm, Troopers from the Fort Wayne Post responded to a personal injury crash at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Flatrock Road, Allen County. The crash resulted in two adults being injured (non-life threatening), and one driver being arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated at over 2 ½ times the legal limit of (.08).

Trooper Brent Lemberg’s preliminary crash investigation found that Scott R. Moorehead (47) of Leo, Indiana was driving a silver Toyota Sienna passenger van eastbound on Flatrock Road.  Moorehead approached the intersection at US 27 and then failed to yield the right of way to a southbound Dodge Journey passenger car driven by Laura Cadena (52) of Decatur, Indiana.  As Moorehead drove across the southbound lanes of US27, evidence left on the roadway showed Cadena attempted to take evasive action prior to colliding into Moorehead’s van.  Both vehicle sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from scene.

Cadena and her adult female passenger both sustained injuries as a result of the crash.  Both women were transported from the scene by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. Neither Moorehead nor his 14yr old son (front seat passenger) were injured, however they were both checked and cleared at the scene by EMS personnel. All occupants were properly restrained in their respective vehicles, and air bag technology deployed in both vehicles, which is believed to have greatly reduced the extent of injuries sustained.

During the course of the crash investigation, troopers quickly developed suspicion that Moorehead was operating under the influence of alcohol.  As such, Trooper Andy Wolverton completed a thorough investigation to determine Moorehead’s impairment.  As part of that investigation, Moorehead was transported from the scene to the Allen County jail facility.  There he was requested to take a chemical breath test.  Moorehead complied with that chemical testing procedure, which subsequently determined him to have a breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) of (.21).

At the completion of the investigation, Moorehead was placed under arrest and booked into the Allen County Jail on the following charges:

  • Operating While Intoxicated while having a passenger under the age of 18yrs, Level 6 Felony.
  • Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, Level (A) Misdemeanor
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, Level (A) Misdemeanor

Troopers were assisted during the investigation by the Allen County Police Department, Southwest Fire/EMS (Poe), and Parker’s Wrecker Service.
