(12-15-22) Mercer County will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Mercer County Courthouse during the week of September 11-17, 2023.
The dedication of the new courthouse in Mercer County in 1923 was a highlight of that year. The building today still stands as a centerpiece of the City of Celina and Mercer County. Its beautiful architecture design still stands out. Below you will see the dedication process and what went into celebrating the new building.
The original date to dedicate the Court House was scheduled for July 12th, 1923…but that was changed due to local farmers being busy during harvest. The change to Labor Day was agreed upon in hopes to let as many who wanted to attend to be at the celebration.
On July 6th,1923 the dedication committee meets to finalize some details for the Labor Day dedication of the new Court House.
The dedication committee met again during the week of August 23rd to update the community on the upcoming Labor Day celebration.
One of the dedication events allowed visitors to the free viewing of the 1922 Movie The Old Homestead at the Celina Strand and Fayette Theatres.
The Old Homestead is a 1922 American silent drama film directed by James Cruze and written by Julien Josephson, Perley Poore Sheehan, and Frank E. Woods based upon the play of the same name by Denman Thompson. The film stars Theodore Roberts, George Fawcett, T. Roy Barnes, Fritzi Ridgeway, Harrison Ford, James Mason, and Kathleen O’Connor. The film was released on October 8, 1922, by Paramount Pictures.
One of the featured speakers at the dedication was Ohio’s US Senator Simeon Davison Fess (December 11, 1861 – December 23, 1936) who was a Republican politician and educator from Ohio. He served in the United States House of Representatives (1915 to 1923) and U.S. Senate (1923 to 1935).
Fess was the chairman of the Republican National Congressional Committee from 1918 to 1922. He also served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (1930–1932) during the depression.

Despite a little rain in the morning the event turned out to be quite a success with an estimated crowd to 8,000 to 12,000 according to the Coldwater Chronicle story above.
There was some issues during the event according to the last paragraph of the story, but not any indepth details of what happened…except to say ‘they are a wart on society’ and ‘The man who can see no good in his fellowmen belongs with the pollywogs‘.
Mercer County will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Mercer County Courthouse the week of September 11-17, 2023. Special events and activities are planned for the entire anniversary year. The goal is to promote an appreciation of the building, the service it has provided, and the many public servants who have walked its halls the past 100 years.
