(Fort Wayne, IN) (12-22-21) – Last night at approximately 8:45pm, Troopers from the Fort Wayne Post responded to a reported vehicle crash on I-69 near the Goshen Road interchange (309 mile marker), Fort Wayne, IN. The crash, involving a wrong way passenger vehicle and a jack-knifed semi-tractor trailer, had traffic tied up for nearly six hours for southbound I-69 traffic.
Trooper Brent Lemberg’s preliminary crash investigation revealed that a 2018 Honda CRV passenger vehicle driven by Krista K. Stefanek (48) of Fort Wayne, had entered the southbound lanes of I-69 traveling northbound (wrong way) from the Goshen Road interchange. Stefanek continued northbound in the southbound lanes into the path of an oncoming (southbound) 2002 Freightliner semi-tractor/trailer driven by Edgar Alejandro Pena-Gonzalez (45) of Mexico. Pena-Gonzalez attempted to take evasive action, however he was unable to avoid striking Stefanek’s vehicle. After the near head on collision, the semi-tractor trailer jackknifed blocking the left and middle southbound lanes.
Vehicle damage sustained to the semi-tractor resulted in a fuel spill requiring a hazmat response by the Fort Wayne Fire Department and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). Cleanup of the crash site and hazmat spill required the left and middle lanes of I-69 to be shutdown for nearly six hours, reopening shortly after 2:00 am this morning.
During the course of the crash investigation, interactions with Stefanek led troopers to suspect that she was under the influence of alcohol based on notable impaired behavior. Trooper Bryan Rumple and Trooper Andy Wolverton conducted the investigation for Operating While Intoxicated. Stefanek remained uncooperative with troopers throughout the investigation, and refused all chemical testing. Following a medical evaluation clearance at an area hospital, Stefanek was then transported to the Allen County jail where she was arrested and booked into custody on related charges.
