(5-29-21) The Van Wert Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire, with a possible occupant, at 322 West Crawford Street, Van Wert, Ohio at 4:13 p.m. on May 28, 2021. Upon arrival, at 4:19 p.m., firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from the first story of the residential structure. The main fire was in the living room of the structure. On the primary search of the first floor, the crew found an occupant deceased (n name was released) in the living room. There were no other occupants in the house.

Due to strong winds, the fire was called under control at 5:43. All crews cleared the scene at 8:52 p.m.The damage to the structure was moderate and the loss valued at $50,000.12 firefighters were on scene and 5 apparatus.

Assisting the Van Wert Fire Department was the Van Wert Police Department and the EMA CERT team.

The Ohio State Fire Marshals were contacted to assist with the cause of the fire and the Van Wert County Coroner for the fatality.No fire department personnel were injured during the incident.

The cause of the fire at this time is undetermined and the investigation remains open.
