(5-8-26) Wright State University-Lake Campus professor Dr. Stephen Jacquemin, Mercer County Ag & Natural Resources Director Theresa Dirksen, and colleagues recently published a new study highlighting long-term water quality improvements associated with the restored Prairie Creek wetlands in the Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed.

A few key takeaways:

  • The study analyzed eight years of water quality data, from 2017–2024
  • The Prairie Creek wetlands treated about 4.44 million cubic meters of water, or roughly 5.7% of Prairie Creek’s annual flow
  • Researchers found strong reductions in nutrient concentrations, including 56% total phosphorus81% soluble reactive phosphorus, and 60% nitrate-nitrogen
  • The study reinforces the value of restored wetlands as one important tool for reducing nutrient loading into Grand Lake St. Marys
