St. Marys, Ohio – (5/1-26) Grand Lake Health System is proud to announce the selection of two outstanding undergraduate students, Mya Knapke of Saint Henry, Ohio, and Madison Evans of Celina, Ohio, for its Premed Healthcare Immersion Experience, a competitive program designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.

This immersive initiative reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the future of rural healthcare by investing in early talent development. Through hands-on exposure to clinical, operational, and leadership roles, the program provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare field and the vital role it plays in the community.
Selected through a rigorous application process, participants were evaluated based on academic achievement, demonstrated interest in healthcare, and their ability to articulate a clear vision for their future in medicine. Applicants were required to submit a detailed application, including a personal essay.
Mya Knapke, a Health Sciences student at The Ohio State University, was selected for her strong academic performance and clear commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare. Her application reflected a thoughtful understanding of the field and a desire to make a meaningful impact in patient care.
Madison Evans, a student at Wright State University studying Integrated Science with a Pre[1]Health concentration, stood out for her passion for medicine and her dedication to learning and professional growth. Her engagement and motivation to serve others were evident throughout the selection process.
“Our goal is to create meaningful experiences that not only educate, but truly inspire,” said Cynthia Berning, President and CEO of Grand Lake Health System. “By connecting students with our physicians, nurses, and leaders, we are helping them see what is possible and encouraging them to consider a future right here in our community.”
During the program, participants will rotate through a variety of departments including emergency care, surgery, outpatient services, rehabilitation, and healthcare administration. They will engage directly with providers and staff, gaining insight into both the clinical and operational aspects of healthcare delivery.
“These students distinguished themselves through their passion, professionalism, and commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare,” said Dr. Dawn McNaughton, Chief Medical Officer. “We look for individuals who are not only academically strong, but who also demonstrate curiosity, compassion, and a genuine desire to make a difference.”
The Premed Healthcare Immersion Experience is part of a broader strategy to build a sustainable healthcare workforce in the region. By offering early exposure and mentorship, Grand Lake Health System aims to foster long-term relationships with students who may one day return to serve their local communities as healthcare professionals.
“This program is about more than shadowing, it’s about connection and mentorship, said Holly Jacomet, Vice President of Quality and Physician Practices. “We are proud to invest in these students and support their journey toward becoming future healthcare providers in our rural community.”
A formal recognition and award ceremony will be held following the completion of the program.
