Portland, IN (4-30-26) – The Jay County Sheriff has requested the Indiana State Police to investigate an attack on a detective in the administrative area of the Jay County Sherrif’s Office.

On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Michael Sargent (44) of Portland entered the Jay County Sheriff’s Office to confess to a past crime. While at the facility, a Jay County Sheriff’s Office detective escorted him to a private area to speak with him.
After discussing the alleged crime and determining whether additional information was needed, the detective began escorting Sargent out of the facility so the investigation could continue. While being escorted out, Sargent attempted to grab the detective’s firearm. A struggle immediately ensued between the detective and Mr. Sargent.
Jay County Sheriff Ray Newton, who witnessed the struggle, joined the detective in attempting to secure the weapon. During the struggle, a single shot was fired; fortunately, no one was struck.
The Sheriff and the detective were able to gain control of the firearm and, after a period of resistance, successfully restrain Sargent and take him into custody. No serious injuries were reported.
Sargent was transported to the Jay County Jail. At this time, there are no further details to be released.
The initial investigation by the Indiana State Police resulted in Mr. Sargent being arrested for the following charges:
- Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer: Level 5 Felony
- Battery Against a Public Safety Officer Engaged in Official Duties: Level 6 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement: Level 6 Felony
- Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon: Level 6 Felony
The charges listed are preliminary, formal charges will be determined by the Jay County Prosecutor’s Office upon review of the case. All crimes mentioned are alleged and all suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
