From the Ft Recovery Police Department: – Press Release –

(3-7-22) On Monday, March 7, 2022, at 12:02 am, Officer Adam Diller of the Fort Recovery Police Department was on routine patrol in the Village of Fort Recovery when he was informed that Jay County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office was attempting to stop a black vehicle in Indiana that fled from a traffic stop and it was now approaching Fox Road and the Ohio Indiana State Line Road. Information was learned that Indiana Law Enforcement Officers knew of children in the vehicle and suspected the driver of being impaired. It was learned that the vehicle belonged to Cristopher Lessing of Fort Recovery.

When the suspect vehicle came into Fort Recovery on South Wayne Street, Officer Diller got behind the vehicle and observed it not stop at the stop sign on South Wayne Street at Milligan Street and initiated a traffic stop as the Indiana Law Enforcement units were still following the vehicle but had stopped their pursuit. The driver of the vehicle failed to comply with Officer Diller’s attempt to make the traffic stop. A low-speed pursuit began in Fort Recovery, continued on Sharpsburg Road to the Mercer Darke County Line Road, went into Burkettsville, Ohio for a brief period, and concluded on Watkins Road after a tire deflation device was deployed by a Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy. At this time, it is believed that speeds never went over 35mph in the village and never reached 55mph outside the village corporation limits.

When the vehicle was stopped the driver was ordered out of the vehicle and did not comply. The driver was seen moving around and reaching into the back seat. Officers tried to remove the driver who was identified as Cristopher Lessing (31) of Fort Recovery who was non-compliant and he resisted them by pulling away. Tasers were deployed by a Jay County Indiana Deputy Sheriff and by a Portland, Indiana Officer. Lessing was able to be arrested at this time, was transported to Mercer Health for treatment from being tasered and for suspected drug use. He has been incarcerated with a $50,000 cash bond in the Mercer County Adult Detention Center and two felony charges and three misdemeanor charges have been filed with assistance from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. Seized as evidence was a preliminary weight of over 30 grams of suspected methamphetamines, along with marijuana, and other drug paraphernalia.

Lessing’s children, a male, and female were checked by members of the Southern Mercer County Joint Ambulance District and found to be unharmed. A worker with Mercer County Children Services responded to the scene as did the children’s mother who the children went home with.

Besides the other Agencies listed, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Coldwater Police Department, and members of the Grand Lake Drug Task Force also assisted the Fort Recovery Police Department.

No other information is being released at this time.
