(11-30-20) Pastor Steve Howell leads worship service at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, he is a retired minister from Grace Missionary Church.

The Congregation of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, – Rockford welcomed Pastor Steve Howell to the pulpit on Sunday, November 29, 2020 delivering the third part of the 3 part series – Conversations with Jesus – Jesus talks with a Thirsty Person based on John 4:1-26. His inspiring message included Biblical verses from the Old and New Testament from Isaiah and Revelations.

Pastor Steve went on to read the Gospel Lesson from John 4:1-26 covering Jesus in his ministry –when he knew he had to hurry back to Nazareth, and he and the disciples traveled through Samaria. This was a shortcut that went through a country where Jews and Samarians did NOT get along.

Jesus was weary in this recounting. He understands us and how we get weary, too, according to Pastor Steve. He sat by the ancient well dug by Jacob. It was a hot day and only one woman came to the well to draw water. Jesus initiates the conversation of living water and asks her to give him a drink. She reacts with surprise.

He’s breaking the rules of the day by talking to her, a Samarian and a
woman. Jewish men would not do this.

He is breaking cultural barriers. As Steve explained, Jesus sees her as God’s
creation; he offers her the living water of salvation but she puts him down asking if he is better than Jacob.

He doesn’’t take her comments personally.

He explains that the living water he offers will quench her thirst forever. She thinks this would be good.

He sees her as a thirsty person, drinking swamp water, trying to find salvation. She’s a woman who has had 5 husbands and now lives with another man. Jesus knows she still doesn’’t understand.

He explains to her to go get her husband, and he will offer them the choice to: drink of the living water; never be thirsty again; have their sins
washed away; and eternal life where they will pass from earth directly to the next life when they die.

She suddenly remembers her Bible teachings about the Messiah and says, “When Christ comes, he will tell us everything.”

She understands when Jesus replies, “I, who speak to you, am He.”

He never does get his drink of water, according to Pastor Steve.
