In regards to the death investigation of Dylan Richardson, the Wells County Coroner’s Office has determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging. Toxicology results are still pending.

(Bluffton, IN) -(9-21-20) The Indiana State Police have been requested to investigate the death of an inmate at the Wells County Jail. The Indiana State Police were contacted by the Wells County Sheriff on Sunday morning, September 20, 2020, after jail staff found an inmate unresponsive in an isolated jail cell.
The inmate, Dylan E. Richardson (31) of Ossian, IN, was found unresponsive in his isolated jail cell at approximately 1:25pm by jail staff. Jail staff immediately began providing CPR to Richardson until Wells County emergency medical personnel arrived on scene and took over lifesaving measures. Richardson was immediately transported to the Bluffton Regional Medical Center. Continued attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. Richardson was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 1:57pm.
Richardson had been incarcerated in the Wells County jail since September 16, 2020, and had been held in an isolated cell (related to COVID precautionary protocols) since his intake.
The Wells County Coroner’s office is actively conducting their investigation to determine the cause of death. An autopsy has been conducted, which included toxicology testing (results pending). Once the Coroner’s investigation is complete, those findings will be shared with ISP detectives, allowing them to complete their investigative process.
Notifications have been made to the Richardson family.
This investigation is active and ongoing, and there is no further information to release at this time.
