(7-23-20) Yesterday Governor DeWine placed the State of Ohio under a mandatory mask order beginning at 6:00 PM tonight (7/23/2020).
Health orders are not the responsibility of the Sheriff’s Office, but rather fall under the jurisdiction of the local health department. Our local health department has done a remarkable job of using common sense and good judgment throughout this pandemic. Mercer County does not have a large staff at the health department, so please have patience with them.
If someone is violating the mask order, DO NOT CALL 9-1-1. It is not a 9-1-1 emergency. The Sheriff’s Office is very busy with criminal investigations and does not have time to respond to calls of someone not wearing a mask.
As the Governor said yesterday, people should wear a mask. People with health conditions that make it inadvisable to wear a mask or children under 10 are exempted from the order. You should assume that people not wearing a mask may have a health condition that prevents them from wearing one.
There are strong feelings on both sides of this issue, the Sheriff’s Office asks that people be kind and be courteous to one another. Let’s get through this pandemic together.
