(7-15-19) On Friday July 12th, 2019 around 9:53 p.m. Rockford Patrolman Charles Howe ran a Ohio license plate with expired tags. Ptl. Howe activated his emergency lights and attempted to pull over a Black 2004 Pontiac Grand Am in the Village of Rockford.
The Pontiac, being driven by a lone male, then headed East on U.S. 33 towards Mercer. Patrolman Howe continued to follow the Pontiac with lights and siren activated. The Pontiac then began driving in the opposite lane and force other drivers off the road. The vehicle then turned on to S.R. 707 and crossed over U.S. 127 east bound not stopping.
The pursuit was cancelled after 4 minutes when speeds reached over 100 mph and the roadways unmanageable. Several agencies continued to search for the vehicle in the area. A home owner reported seeing a vehicle in a field and not coming out. Mercer County Sheriff Deputies located the 2004 Pontiac in a dense woods almost a mile from roadway. Several pieces of identification were located in the vehicle and the incident remains under investigation.
The Rockford Police were joined in the pursuit by the Mercer and Auglaize County Sheriff Offices, Celina Police Department and the Ohio Highway Patrol.
