(7-15-19) On July 14, 2019, at approximately 10:50 P.M. the Coldwater Police Department responded to Briarwood Village for a disturbance call. Two female employees that were entering the building were confronted by an unknown male subject that had threatened to inflict harm on them. The employees were able to get to safety and notify authorities. A short time later Ptl. Spencer Heinl arrived on scene where he observed a male subject matching the description provided. The male was alone and appeared to be irate screaming and yelling.

As the officer attempted to make contact with the suspect a foot chase ensued. The officer retreated back to his patrol unit and once again attempted to make contact with the male in the Mercer Health hospital parking lot. As the officer pulled up again to make contact with the suspect, the male charged at the officer in a violent, turbulent behavior. The suspect punched Ptl. Heinl in the face through the window and began kicking the side of the patrol car. The officer was able to exit the vehicle during the course of the scuffle. The suspect continued to resist arrest and assault the officer until back-up units could arrive for assistance.

The male was later identified as a 17-year old juvenile. He was transported to West Central Juvenile Detention Center for a probation violation. The case is being forwarded to the Mercer County Juvenile Prosecutors Office for review of further charges. Heinl suffered minor injuries where he was treated and released from the hospital per Coldwater Police Department protocol.

It is believed the juvenile’s behavior was a direct side effect from taking LSD or “Acid” as a common street name for the drug. We want to caution parents on having these discussions with your children and to be aware of what is out there. We would also like to thank the St. Henry Police Department and Mercer County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance at the scene.
