law day

(5-15-19) The Mercer County Bar Association will be recognizing Law Day on May 16th, 2019 at 12:00 pm at the Mercer County Courthouse in the Probate Courtroom. To honor Law Day, the Bar Association once again sponsored an essay contest. The essay contest was open to all seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students in Mercer County. This year, the Law Day theme was “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”. In the United States and around the world, freedom of speech and the press are among the most important foundations for a free society. Free speech and free press are prominent topics in public discourse and litigation. It is impossible to imagine a free society without these individual liberties, yet historical and current debates surrounding them continually challenge us to consider their boundaries and resilience. Change in technology have reshaped how free speech and free press work in the everyday world. The 2019 Law Day theme – Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society – focuses on these cornerstones of representative government and calls on us to understand and protect these rights to ensure, as the U.S. Constitution proposes, “the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.”

Examples of topics on which students may base their essays include, but are not limited to:

(1) Why are free speech, free press, and free society so important to a free society?
(2) How does technology shape how free speech and free press work in the everyday world?
(3) Why is it so important to have a free press in a free society?

The Mercer County Bar Association would like to announce and congratulate the winners of the essay contest.

  • 1st prize – $100.00 to Madison Evans (Celina)
  • 2nd prize – $75.00 to Raven Harris (Celina)
  • 3rd prize – $50.00 to Carly Fullenkamp (Celina)

In addition, the winners, their parents, and their teachers are invited to a luncheon and courthouse awards presentation with members of the Mercer County Bar Association, commissioners, and elected officials. We thank all of the students who submitted an essay for our essay contest.
