19 year old Wesley Michael Slaughter, a resident of the apartment complex, has been arrested on a felony charge of aggravated arson in connection with the fire. The fire took place Sunday evening around 11 pm at 1 Perry Street, the former Koneta Hotel, in Downtown Wapakoneta. The building had been turned into an apartment complex
According to those who lived in the facility Slaughter lived at the complex. Between 20 to 30 people were displaced due to the fire, including Randy’s Barber Shop. No one was injured during the fire.
Mercy Unlimited, located at 38 E. Auglaize St., is accepting donations of clothing for those who wish to help. Monetary donations are also being accepted. Checks can be made out to Mercy Unlimited Fire Fund. Gift card donations can also be made with smaller amounts like $5 being preferred over large amount like $125, according to the Auglaize County EMA.
The fire is under investigation by Wapakoneta Police, the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, the Wapakoneta Fire Department and the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
