(8-25-26) Celina City Schools is reviewing its policies and administrative guidelines following public discussion Monday afternoon at the Board of Education meeting over homeschool students participating in the district’s band program.

Members of the public addressed the Celina Board of Education regarding homeschool students who are partially enrolled in the district in order to participate in band.

The district’s current practice does not fully align with the language contained in its existing policies and administrative guidelines and is now seeking legal guidance on how those policies can be adjusted to comply with Ohio law.

While that review continues, only homeschool students who are currently participating in the band program under the existing arrangement will be allowed to continue.

Homeschool students currently wanting to join the program will now have to wait for the district to decide. Another option might be for students to possibly open enroll in an area school.

The decision to evaluate the matter took place four months ago in April on a decision by Superintendent Gessler. The 2008 administrative guideline is from 18 years ago.
