(5-11-23) Recently two Jay County men appeared in Jay Circuit Court, one pleaded guilty and received a plea deal, the other was found guilty by a jury.

Erik E. Caffey (42) Redkey pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, a Level 5 felony with a maximum six-year sentence, after striking a deal with Jay County prosecutors.

In February of this year, Caffey was served a search warrant at his Redkey home and confiscated his cellphone. Photos and videos according to authorities showed juveniles between the ages of 2 and 16 engaging in sexual activity, in some cases with adults.

Under the terms of a plea agreement taken under advisement by Jay Circuit Court Judge Brian Hutchison, Caffey would receive a three-year sentence, with no more than 18 months of incarceration, likely followed by a period on probation.

Caffey will be sentenced on June 1, if Judge Hutchinson accepts the terms of the deal..

A Jay Circuit Court Jury found Chance L. Mata (26) Portland was found guilty of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon.

Mata was also convicted of intimidation, and found to be a habitual offender. He will be sentenced by Judge Hutchison on May 23.

The confinement charge is a Level 3 felony carrying up to 15 years in prison.
