Four Dead, Turnpike Closed After 50 Vehicle Blizzard Accident

(12-23-22) According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol at least four people are dead and numerous others are injured after a 50-vehicle crash along the Ohio Turnpike.

The multi-vehicle crash along the turnpike happened in Sandusky County early Friday afternoon.

Troopers said there were multiple crashes emergency officials responded to on the Ohio Turnpike eastbound lanes between state route 53 and route 4 in Erie County. The road is closed in both directions and eastbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 91 and westbound traffic is being rerouted to exit 118.

It is our understanding that Clyde HS Athletic Director, Ryan Greenslade, and the Clyde Transportation Director took busses to the scene of a 50+ vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike to rescue stranded motorists in -28 degree wind chill temperatures. Some heroes don’t wear capes.

Buses are taking people stranded on the turnpike to the Castalia Maintenance Building, according to the PIO for the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission.

ALERT UPDATE: All WB traffic will be diverted off at Exit-118 US 250/Sandusky) all EB traffic will be diverted off at Exit-91 (SR 53/Sandusky). All EB/WB lanes remain blocked @ MP 106.0 (Sandusky Co) due to multiple crashes, long delays expected.
