The district and its partners focus on design, budget, schedule as project begins

CELINA, Ohio (9-20-22)— Celina Facilities Director Phil Metz released the following update on Celina City Schools building project.

The design of the future Celina Elementary School is well underway. The building, which will include a new 115,000-square-foot addition to the existing Celina Intermediate School, will serve pre-kindergarten through 6th-grade students.

The addition will be home to PK-3 students and be constructed west of the existing CIS building
located on Portland Street. The 81,000-square-foot CIS will be renovated and re-programmed as part of the building project and serve grades 4-6. Garmann Miller, the architectural/engineering firm of record, has had several meetings with staff and teachers to better understand their needs for their respective rooms and spaces. As the programmatic and functional aspects of the design continue to be developed in collaboration with the district, Garmann Miller’s team also is designing exterior elements of the building. According to Matt Hibner, GM’s director of architecture, the firm anticipates providing preliminary renderings of the Celina Elementary School in the coming weeks, at which time the district will share with the community.

From a schedule standpoint, the schematic design submission has been completed, and the construction manager, Wapakoneta-based Peterson Construction, has reconciled the budget. To keep on track with the original schedule, the project team will be submitting the site design to the City of Celina for planning and zoning review and approval in the next few weeks. Once approved, the intent is for Peterson Construction to bid and procure an Early Site Package to begin the construction process this fall. The building design will continue to evolve based on additional stakeholder feedback as the site construction activities begin. The final design, which will be compiled as the Main Building Package, will be completed, bid and procured by Peterson Construction in early 2023. Construction of the Celina Elementary School Building is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2024.

Celina City Schools, which is in partnership with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission to co-fund the overall project, is planning a groundbreaking in October to kick off this exciting time for the district. More to follow from CCS in the coming weeks.

Design of the future Celina High School/Middle School will follow the design completion of the Celina Elementary School in early 2023. This new 7-12 building will be located on the existing Celina Primary School and Celina High School campus. Construction is slated to start in summer 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2026.
