UPDATED: Coldwater Fire Department Press Release
Coldwater Police Chief Jason Miller announces that officers are investigating a vehicle crash involving a semi-tractor trailer and a train. The incident occurred on Thursday June 16th 2022. Mercer County Sheriffs Office Dispatch received a 911 call regarding the incident at 11:21 am. The caller advised of a crash at West Main Street and First Street in the Village of Coldwater.
A 2019 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer, driven by Kwaku Wiredu (44) of Columbus and a 1978 General Motors train driven by Kent Jones( 54) Fort Recovery, were involved in the accident.
The semi-tractor trailer was traveling East on West Main Street. The semi-tractor trailer was stopped in traffic West of the railroad crossing at West Main Street and First Street. The train was traveling North East on the RJ Corman railroad tracks. The semi-tractor trailer then proceeded East through the railroad crossing. The train then struck the trailer of the semi-tractor trailer. Upon striking the semi-tractor trailer, the trailer was pushed into a building at 204 West Main Street Coldwater, otherwise known as The Mr. Shoppe.
The trailer of the semi-tractor trailer sustained disabling damage, The Mr. Shoppe sustained heavy damage, an unoccupied vehicle parked on North First Street sustained functional damage, and the train sustained minor damage.
The driver of the semi-tractor trailer was issued a citation for failure to yield at a railroad grade crossing.
No injuries were reported on scene.
Assisting Coldwater Officers on scene were Saint Henry Police Department, Mercer County Sheriffs Office, Coldwater Fire Department, Coldwater EMS, Ohio State Highway Patrol Motor Enforcement Carrier Unit, Mercer County EMA, MCERV, and the Coldwater Street Department
(6-16-22) This morning first responders in Mercer County were sent to a crash involving a train and a semi-trailer in the 200 block of Main Street in Coldwater.
Main Street, which is also State 219, is closed in both directions, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
