(3-31-22) According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Department a toddler may have drowned Wednesday in rural near Berne.

Emergency service workers were called about noon Wednesday on the report of a possible drowning.

The child had been missing for some time before being located by a family member, head down in a 39-inch hole that contained 10 inches of water, the statement said. The hole was man-made and intended to have a post set in it for construction purposes.

Police and emergency-service workers began performing lifesaving measures. The toddler was taken to a local hospital by Lutheran Air and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Berne and Geneva police, Berne firefighters, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Adams County EMS and the Indiana Department of Child Services assisted.

No names or addresses have been released at this time.


Menno B. Schwartz, 3, of Berne passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born January 18, 2019, in Allen County to Andrew A. and Becky S. (Schwartz) Schwartz of Berne.

He is survived by his parents; five brothers, Daniel B. Schwartz; John B. Schwartz; Jacob B. Schwartz; Andrew B. Schwartz; and Reuben B. Schwartz; two sisters, Becky B. Schwartz; and Edith B. Schwartz; maternal grandparents, John and Becky Schwartz; paternal grandparents, Dan and Edith Schwartz of Berne; great-grandmother, Mary E. Schwartz of Berne; Mary N. Schwartz of LaGrange; and several aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be Friday, April 1 from 2-8 p.m. and Saturday, April 2 all day at the Menno B. Schwartz residence. Funeral services will be Sunday, April 3 at 9 a.m. Officiating will be Bishop John E. Schwartz. Burial will be at Bunker Hill Cemetery in Adams County.
