(10-18-21) On Friday at about 11:20 p.m. the Steuben County (Indiana) Sheriff’s Office says they were contacted by the Kendallville Police Department in connection to a child abuse investigation.
Dakota McHenry – Derek Pierce
A 3-year-old child was taken to Cameron Memorial Hospital in Angola, for critical injuries.
After speaking with the child’s father, the injuries did not match up with the information being provided by the father, Derek Pierce (31) of Kendallville and his girlfriend Dakota McHenry (25) of Fort Wayne.
Hospital officials contacted the Kendallville Police Department because they believed the injuries occurred there.
Detectives later determined the child’s injuries happened at HI-VUE campground near Lake Gage in Steuben County.
McHenry was arrested by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office on felony charges of neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury, domestic battery to a child less than 14 years of age causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice.
Pierce was arrested by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office on felony charges of neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice.
McHenry and Pierce are both being held without bond.
The child is currently at the Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne and listed in critical condition.
This case remains under investigation.
