(9-24-21) Today Jay Circuit Court Judge Brian Hutchison sentenced Shelby Hiestand (20) of Portland to 55 years in prison for her part in the Jan. 12, 2020, shooting death of Shea Briar. Hiestand and Esther Stephen have both been found guilty for killing Briar. Briar was Stephen’s boyfriend and also the father of their young child.

In March a jury found Stephen guilty of the crime, she was also sentenced to 55 years for murder and has already started to serve her time at the Rockville Correctional Facility.

Hiestand during the trial was pointed out as the one who shot Briar in the back with a .22-caliber rifle, and left him to die on a side road.

Hiestand said during the sentencing –

“I’m so sorry for my actions. I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive myself.”

Both women had been softball coaches at Ft. Recovery.

A third woman involved with the murder, Hannah Knapke (19) of Ft. Recovery, will stand trial on November 15th.
