(2-11-21) Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reports that his office is investigating a serious traffic crash that occurred on St. Rte. 49 at the intersection of Frahm Pike. Central dispatch received a 911 call at 3:20 PM today (February 11th, 2021). The caller reported a crash involving a semi and passenger van.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Chevy Express van was Northbound on St Rte. 49 and attempted to turn left (West) onto Frahm Pike. The van turned in front of a south bound 2021 Peterbilt semi. The vehicles collided in the intersection, went off of the west side of the roadway and rolled over. Due to the severity of the crash and injuries, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office traffic crash reconstruction team was sent to assist with the investigation.
The 2014 Chevy Express van is owned by Portland Transport LLC of Portland, Indiana. It was operated by Manuel Bermudez (53) 266 South Jefferson Street, Apt 4 Berne, Indiana. Bermudez was uninjured in the crash, however 3 of the van’s passengers were injured.
Front Seat Passenger: Levi B Shetler 32 was transported by private vehicle to an unknown hospital for treatment. His address is currently unknown.
Second Row Left Passenger: Harvey M Eicher was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported by Mercer County EMS to a local hospital.
Second Row Middle Passenger: Harvey H Eicher was ejected from the vehicle and trapped underneath it. He was transported from the scene by Lutheran Air to a trauma center.
Second Row Right Passenger: Walter H Eicher: was trapped inside the van and was extricated by the fire department. He was transported by Mercer County EMS to a local hospital.
The semi was operated by Cody S Stammen (21) of 3086 Fort Recovery – Minster Road St. Henry, Ohio. The semi is owned by SM Tobin LLC of Celina, Ohio. Stammen was hauling feed on his trailer and was uninjured.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by members of the Chatt Fire Department, Rockford Fire Department, Celina Fire Department, Rockford EMS, Celina EMS, Mercer County Emergency Response Volunteers (MCERV), Mercer County EMA, Celina Utilities, Lake Shore Auto (Wrecker Service), Jacksons Garage (Wrecker Service) and Belna Petroleum.
The crash remains under investigation at the time.
