(10-20-20) The Mercer County Health District (MCHD) reports that the 26th Mercer County resident to die from COVID-19 was a 66-year-old male from Celina.

As of October 20, 2020, the MCHD reports 1,350 confirmed cases, 145 probable cases, 1,193 recovered cases, 94 pending cases, 4,034 negative cases, 9 hospitalizations, 26 deaths, and 2 probable deaths of COVID-19. There have been 3 confirmed cases who have passed away due to causes other than COVID-19. Currently, there are 126 active cases of COVID-19 in Mercer County

As of today, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reports Mercer County has seen 376 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks. This is the highest incidence rate Mercer County has seen during the pandemic.  In terms of incidence of new COVID-19 cases, Mercer County is the third-ranked county in Ohio.

The incidence rate that is updated twice a week is significant for a couple of reasons. First, it is looking at the number of new cases over the past two weeks.  This provides a better indicator of the current trend than does the incidence rate over the entire pandemic, as it is reported in the CDC county-level data. Also, the fact that the incidence rate is reported in new cases per 100,000 population allows valid comparisons between rates of occurrence of new cases in different jurisdictions. For example, Franklin County may have a much higher case count than Mercer, but Franklin county also has a much larger population. By comparing rates per 100,000 we can tell which county actually has a higher rate of occurrence of new cases. This is more meaningful than looking at raw numbers of new cases or active cases.
