(9-1-20) Mercer County Sheriff, Jeff Grey reports that his office received a 911 call at 3:38 PM. The caller had indicated that a family member had hung a note on a tree indicating that he was suicidal and then left walking into a woods attached to the property of 8796 Indiana Ohio State Line Road Celina, Ohio. Deputies responded to the scene upon arrival, gunshots were heard, but deputies were unsure if they were the intended target or if he was shooting into the air. A short time later, as back up units from Celina Police Department arrived, the suspect stepped out from behind an abandoned refrigerator with the firearm in his hand. A Celina Police Officer (not identified) fired multiple rounds at the suspect.
Sheriff Grey called in assistance from the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office SRT Team (Special Response Team), Van Wert Sheriff’s Office, Celina Police Department, Adams County Indiana Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol Air Unit (Helicopter). Grey reported that shortly after 8:00 PM, the SRT Team located the male in a culvert and were able to extract him. At this time the suspect is being held in the Mercer County Adult Detention Facility for inducing panic. He has been identified as Rick A Bult, (59) 8796 Indiana Ohio State Line Road.
Also assisting at the scene were members of the Celina Fire Department (EMS) and assistance was given by Lake Field Airport to refuel the OSP Air Unit.
Sheriff Grey would like the thank all of the agencies that responded. Lots of manpower and resources were used, but the best outcome was able to be obtained. Grey advised that no one received any injuries.
Sheriff Grey advised that not every agency can afford to have all of the specialized units or equipment, but when another agency needs helps, we all pull our resources together and work as one team. Tonight it all paid off.
This case remains under investigation. When the investigation is complete, the case will be reviewed by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if other charges are warranted.
