(12-16-19) Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas M. Riggenbach released that his Office is investigating a double fatal crash that occurred on Liberty Union Road at Van Wert Willshire Road.  At 4:24pm, on Sunday December 15th a 9-1-1 call was phoned in about a 2-vehicle car crash on Liberty Union Rd. at Van Wert Willshire Rd.

A 2009 Ford Fusion, driven by Eric Mwamba, of Lexington, Kentucky, and a 2015 Ford Edge, driven by Cynthia Schumm of Van Wert, Ohio, were involved in the crash.

Based on evidence at the scene, the crash appeared to have happened when the vehicle being driven south bound on Liberty Union Rd. by Eric Mwamba failed to stop at the stop sign and was struck on the passenger side by the vehicle being driven east bound on Van Wert Willshire Rd. by Cynthia Schumm. The Ford Fusion and the Ford Edge came to rest on the east side of Liberty Union Rd. Both the Ford Fusion and the Ford Edge sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.

The driver of the Ford Fusion, Eric Mwamba, was transported by helicopter to Parkview Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The passenger in the Ford Fusion, Laetitia Tchamala  of Haltom City. Texas, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Tchamala was pronounced dead at the scene by the Van Wert County Coroner’s Office and was transported to Van Wert Health. The driver of the Ford Edge, Cynthia Schumm, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Van Wert Heath by Van Wert EMS and later transported to St. Rita’s Hospital by Helicopter.

Sheriff Riggenbach said the crash remains under investigation.
