(9-18-19)George Kornegor was the latest speaker at the Celina Kiwanis Club… “Development Has No Disability.” This is the motto of the Kiwanis Aktion Club, an organization for adults with disabilities. The Mercer County chapter is sponsored by the Celina and Coldwater Kiwanis clubs.
The club was chartered in 2004. They meet the second Tuesday of every month at Briarwood Village in Coldwater. The club has 26 extremely active members.
Their fundraisers have included selling pies for Thanksgiving, publishing a cookbook of recipes from members’ families, and raffling off a TV. As service projects, members have collected coupons for military families and box tops for Box Tops for Education.
They’ve participated in Operation Christmas Child, the Angel Tree project, and the Magic Mile for Pediatric Trauma. Club donations have gone to the military and local food pantries.
According to club treasurer, George Kornegor, the Mercer County Aktion Club was the first Aktion Club in the state to give away scholarships. These are awarded to individuals with disabilities and those going to school to work with the disabled. The scholarships are given in memory of deceased members.
