(7-11-18) The Ft. Wayne Children’s Zoo announced on Facebook today that on July 5th that one of their giraffe’s, eight year old Zahra, who had been ill and under veterinary care since June 21st had passed away.

Dr. Kami Fox, Staff Veterinarian

“Zahra first seemed to have a mild lameness in mid-June and later showed decreased appetite. Because of the excellent animal training from our Animal Care Team, we were able to obtain blood samples during her illness for diagnostics and to monitor her response to treatment. Despite the weeks of supportive care and diet supplementation, she developed digestive issues, causing a life-threatening condition and her ultimate death.”

Zahra was born October 17, 2009 at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo to two Ft. Wayne Zoo giraffes, Jelani and Zuri, Zahra was also the mother of Kita, the giraffe calf born less then a year ago in August.
