(1-11-18) Steuben County-Today two men were seriously injured in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road.  The crash happened near mile marker 140 in the eastbound lanes.  This is located approximately four miles west of the Angola exit.


Indiana State Police dispatch received a call around 3:30 p.m. of a passenger car that had been traveling westbound and crossed the center median, crashing head-on into a semi that was traveling eastbound.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Matthew Henson shows that a red 2007 Hyundai, driven by Jeffrey Stroike, age 32 of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was traveling westbound and, for an unknown reason, crossed the center median and collided head-on with a white 2014 Volvo semi operated by RDF Logistics that was traveling eastbound.  Stroike was ejected during the crash and was transported to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, with life-threatening injuries.  The driver of the Volvo, William Aponte, age 44 of Bronx, New York, was entrapped and had to be extricated.  Aponte was transported to Parkview Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.


Westbound lanes opened at approximately 4:00 p.m.  Eastbound lanes remained closed until approximately 6:30 p.m. for the crash investigation and reconstruction by Indiana State Police Reconstructionist Marc Leatherman.

The Indiana State Police were assisted by Steuben County EMS, Fremont Police Department, ITRCC Maintenance and Bill’s Professional Towing.

This crash remains under investigation.
