(4-7-26) Portland (Indiana) City Council last night approved an ordinance that bans roosters and sets a number limit of five on chicken hens in a 4-3 vote on the first reading.
Other requirements…
- including a coop
- a run with at least 12 square feet of space per chicken
- chickens do not cause a nuisance in the form of noise, odor or damage.
The original version of the ordinance would have banned farm livestock, including horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats and fowl, from being kept within the city limits. It passed on first reading in January, but council members tabled that at their next meeting after hearing concerns from residents. At the March 2 council meeting, members suggested revising the ordinance to only ban roosters.
