Jay County Turkey Farm Under Quarantine

(3-9-26) The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) reports that a commercial turkey farm in Jay County is under quarantine after bird flu was recently detected in its flock.

The farm was reported to have have a flock size of nearly 21,000.

The farm has been quarantined, with a 10-kilometer control area is in place around the farm, including parts of Adams and Jay County

A 20-kilometer surveillance zone around the farm has also been set up, which includes parts of Adams and Jay County.

BOAH officials say the depopulation of birds in quarantined areas starts as soon as the department works out the necessary logistics. After testing to determine that the virus is no longer present, the quarantine is lifted, and those affected can begin restocking.

The agency urges all poultry owners to remain aware and report any signs of illness in their flocks.

Animal owners should be aware of symptoms in poultry, such as lack of energy, decreased egg production, respiratory issues, and sudden death.

BOAH notes that the bird flu does not present a food safety risk, saying cooked poultry, eggs, and pasteurized dairy products are safe to eat.
