PUBLIC NOTICE – BRYANT FIRE DEPARTMENT

(2-24-26) Yesterday morning at approximately 4:00 AM, a motor vehicle accident occurred on IN 67 between 550 E and 650 E in Wabash Township. Since then, many community members have reached out asking why the Bryant Fire Department did not respond. We want to provide clarity and ensure everyone has accurate information.

The Bryant Fire Department was not notified of this emergency by the Jay County Sheriff Dispatch Center, nor were we requested for mutual aid by the responding Adams County units. Because we were never alerted, we were unaware of the incident as it occurred and unable to respond.

At this time, we do not have all the details regarding how the call was dispatched or the severity of the incident.

What we can confirm:

  • Wabash Township’s western boundary is CR 550 E.
  • Fire protection and emergency services are contracted as follows:
  • Bryant Fire Department covers all areas south of IN 67
  • Geneva Fire Department covers all areas north of IN 67
  • Mutual aid agreements are in place with all neighboring departments; however, mutual aid must be requested by the department managing the incident.
  • Ongoing discussions between Jay County Fire Chiefs and the Jay County Sheriff’s Department are exploring automatic aid activations for certain types of emergencies to help prevent similar situations in the future.
  • In short: We could not respond to an incident we were never made aware of.

We extend a sincere THANK YOU to everyone who reached out with concerns and support. The Bryant Fire Department remains fully committed to serving and protecting the residents of Jay County, our surrounding communities, and all who travel through our great Jay County.
