(2-18-26) Mike Weitzel has confirmed today that he has been removed from his position as Portland Fire Chief following a meeting with Portland Mayor Jeff Westlake at City Hall earlier in the day. Despite the change he will remain as a firefighter in the department.

Weitzel said he was told the decision came down to a lack of alignment between himself and the mayor.

According to Weitzel he was told that firefighter Chuck Denney is expected to assume the role of fire chief.

Weitzel has been the Chief of the department since early 2016 after being appointed by former mayor Randy Geesaman. His career with the Portland Fire Department began as a volunteer in 2008, followed by full-time service starting in 2010. Prior to becoming chief, he served as a captain for two years.
