ST. MARYS, OHIO – (1-22-26) Grand Lake Health System has been named the highest-scoring hospital in its peer group in Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s 2024 Quality-In-Sights(r) Hospital Incentive Program(r), a distinction that places the St. Marys-based organization among the leading hospitals in the state. The program evaluates hospitals on quality, safety, patient satisfaction, and health outcomes.
Grand Lake achieved a total score of 93.71 out of 100, surpassing the regional midpoint of 71.01 and earning the top overall ranking among hospitals of similar size across Ohio. This result reflects a consistent commitment to patient care and a community-first culture that extends from bedside caregivers to senior leadership.
Cindy Berning, President and Chief Executive Officer of Grand Lake Health System, credits the achievement to the dedication of the staff.
“This accomplishment reflects the commitment of every member of our team. Our physicians, nurses, and support staff work every day to deliver safe, high-quality care. Being recognized by Anthem confirms that their efforts are making a difference for the patients and families we serve.”
The analysis showed Grand Lake performing in the top quartile across key measures of hospital quality. The health system maintained low infection rates, strong performance in surgical outcomes including hip and knee procedures, and readmission rates well below regional averages. Patients also gave high marks for communication with physicians and nurses, reinforcing the organization’s belief that patients are neighbors and family, not just numbers, and their needs remain the top priority for the entire Grand Lake community.
Jane Peterson, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio
“Grand Lake Health System has shown what it means to prioritize quality in every part of the patient experience. By improving health outcomes and reducing unnecessary complications, hospitals can enhance care and support greater affordability – a benefit that directly impacts Grand Lake’s patients and their families.”
Holly Jacomet, Vice President of Quality and Physician Practices at Grand Lake, emphasized the personal nature of the award.
“This recognition reflects the heart of who we are,” Jacomet said. “Every department shares the same goal of providing exceptional care for every patient, every time. Being recognized as the top hospital in our peer group validates the hard work and passion our teams bring to our community every single day.”
Dr. Lance Bryant, Chief of Staff for Grand Lake, highlighted the importance of the QHIP program itself.
“The program is rigorous and data driven. To lead our peer group in overall performance shows that our focus on infection prevention, communication, and patient experience is producing meaningful results.”
For Grand Lake Health System, the recognition is both a milestone and a motivator. The organization intends to build on this success by continuing to use Q-HIP feedback to refine processes to further strengthen its already high levels of patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
