Steve Baker

(12-31-25) Longtime WHIO-TV reporter Steve Baker passed away early this (Wednesday) morning.

The following bio of Steve Baker that he wrote—appeared on the WHIO TV web site—

I was born into a news family and began his career at WPTW in Piqua in 1970. In 1980, I joined the team at WHIO-TV and worked throughout my career as a “one-man-band” covering five counties in the northern area. While I officially “retired” in 2017, I continued to work under contract for WHIO-TV until December 2020, celebrating my 50th anniversary in broadcasting in 2020.

May 9, 2016 The Miami County Sheriff’s Office has released new information into a 1981 death investigation of a female who has never identified. Major Steve Lord talks to NewsCenter 7’s Steve Baker.

News is obviously in my blood, as I continue to listen to police scanners twenty-four seven, and shoot and turn in many human-interest stories at the present time as well as posting news on social media.

I am a U.S. Navy veteran. I hold an honorary degree from Edison State Community College and attended Wright State University.

I was inducted into the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2011. I also hold a National Distinguished Leadership Award and have received many commendations for my work and community service to include those from the Ohio School Board Association, Ohio News Photographers Association, Queen City Society of Professional Journalists, the National Commission Against Drunk Driving, the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, Ohio Sheriff’s Association, and the Ohio House of Representatives, to name a few. Most recently, I was recognized by the State for serving 22 years on the Board of Developmental Disabilities of Miami County. I have chaired the Leadership Troy “Meet the Candidate” forum for 30 years. My past volunteer work included serving on the Lehman Catholic High School Foundation, the Distribution Committee of The Troy Foundation, the Board of Governors of the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, and various church-related committees.

I have been married to my wife, Marty, for over 50 years and we have 2 adult children and 4 grandchildren.
