NEW BREMEN, Ohio (12-16-25) — The Ohio Restaurant & Hospitality Alliance (ORHA) has announced that Joel Hemmelgarn, executive chef at 17 West in New Bremen, has been named its 2025 Chef of the Year. Hemmelgarn is the association’s first recipient of the newly established award, which recognizes exceptional culinary talent, innovation and influence within Ohio’s restaurant and hospitality community.

Hemmelgarn received multiple nominations and was selected by public vote. Supporters highlighted his impact on the region’s dining scene, noting that “Chef Joel” has created many new and innovative menu offerings that have positively impacted the overall 17 West dining experience.

Hemmelgarn received the award during the ORHA Awards Dinner held December 8 in Columbus. The annual event gathers industry professionals from across the state to honor leaders in culinary excellence, service and hospitality.

Guests can experience Chef Joel’s awarding-winning approach at 17 West from 11 am to 9 pm, Monday through Friday, and 4 to 9 pm on Saturday.
