Here are the details known so far:
Operation Allies Welcome (OAW) was a U.S. government-led effort, primarily managed by the Department of Homeland Security, to support and resettle vulnerable Afghans, including those who worked with the United States, in the U.S.. Initiated in August 2021, the operation provided temporary housing, medical care, and assistance with processing and integration, and it concluded with the closure of its final “safe haven” operations in late 2022
Suspect identified in D.C. shooting of two National Guard members, officials say
Two members of the West Virginia National Guard who were on patrol were shot and are in critical condition. Their identities have not been released.
The attack occurred near 17th and I Street NW. Officials described it as a “targeted shooting” where the assailant “came around the corner” and immediately opened fire with a handgun. The suspect was subdued by other National Guard members and taken into custody. He is also hospitalized after being shot during the incident.
In response to the shooting, President Donald Trump asked for 500 more National Guard troops to be deployed to Washington, D.C., adding to 2,100 already there.
