(10-29-25) Two people were killed, one person was hospitalized with critical injuries and four others, including a 3-year-old, suffered minor injuries in two separate crashes in Defiance County on Tuesday.
The first crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 127 and State Route 249 west of the village of Ney at 11:21 a.m.
Cierra Jaquillard (26) Toledo was driving an SUV with a 3-year-old in the passenger seat in the back east on the state route when she did not yield at a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. 127. She was then hit by a motor home traveling north on U.S. 127.
Both vehicles went off the road and the motor home driver Jay Shaffer (61) of Archbold, was partially ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Toledo woman and her 3-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The intersection reopened Tuesday afternoon following a three-hour closure.
The second crash happened about six miles south of the first shortly before 2 p.m.
A 2018 GMC Acadia, operated by Robert Peel Jr (33) of Angola, Indiana was driving an SUV east on Buckskin Road when he did not yield at a stop sign at the intersection with The Bend Road. He then hit another SUV heading north on The Bend Road and both vehicles went off the road.
The driver of the second SUV Mary Chapman (63) of Ney, she was wearing a safety belt and was transported to Parkview Bryan Hospital by Sherwood EMS, where she was pronounced deceased. Her passenger, John Chapman (42) was allegedly not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was taken to Mercy Health Defiance Hospital with critical injuries. He was then flown to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center.
Peel, Jr. was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The intersection of The Bend and Buckskin roads reopened Tuesday afternoon following a two-hour closure.
Both crashes are under investigation, according to OSHP.
