(10-26-25) A new study reveals that Ohio has the ninth highest rate of park and playground abductions in the United States.
The research by personal injury lawyers H&P Lawanalyzed state data for abductions occurring in parks and playgrounds from 2019 to 2023 via the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer. Abduction rates per 100,000 residents were calculated to identify the states with the highest risk of kidnapping in public recreational areas.
Ohio ranks ninth in the nation for park abductions, with 0.77 incidents per 100,000 residents — approximately 71% higher than the national average of 0.45. Between 2019 and 2023, the Buckeye State, with approximately 11.76 million residents, experienced 91 abductions from parks and playgrounds. The worst year was 2021, with 29 incidents, while 2023 had the fewest at 10.
Looking at the study, a spokesperson at H&P Law commented:
“The study highlights that Ohio reported the ninth highest park abduction rates in the U.S.
“Unattended children in parks and recreational areas remain particularly vulnerable to abduction. This risk is amplified in tourist destinations and areas with transient populations where strangers may not raise immediate suspicion.
“To reduce these preventable incidents, state leaders and policymakers can implement comprehensive strategies, including enhanced public awareness campaigns, increased park security presence, and the integration of technology-driven solutions such as surveillance systems and emergency alert beacons.”
