Monthly programming returns at GPL

GREENVILLE – After a productive month of August at Greenville Public Library, it’s time to announce that our regular programming is back!

Story times will restart on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and will return to its regular dates and time of Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Lego Club will also be returning with the first gathering being held on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Adult programming will kick off with the return of Classic Movie Matinees on Thursday the 18th at 1 p.m. This month we’ll be showing the 1992 family sports comedy, A League of Their Own. Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna, the film depicts the formation and beginnings of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II.

This film is rated PG with a run time of 2 hours and 8 minutes. Patrons are encouraged to bring their favorite movie snacks and drinks, as well as a sweater for anyone who is easily chilled. As always, this event is completely free to attend!

Adult programming continues the 18th at 5:30 p.m. with the return of the Bring Your Own Book Club.

There’s no required book to read for this club! Read whatever you want or bring whatever you’re reading. Even if you haven’t been reading lately, bring your favorite book to share. The only requirement is that you come ready to talk about books! Ages 14and up are welcome, but we do ask that anyone unable to drive is picked up promptly at 6:30. If you have any questions, contact Nikki at (937) 548-3915.

Crochet Club will be held on Tuesday, September 23 from noon to 2 p.m. Whether you’re a pro working on your 50th blanket or someone who’s never picked up a crochet hook (or even know what a crochet hook is!), you’re welcome to attend! Supplies are provided for anyone wanting to practice or learn the basics, or you can bring your own. And even though it’s called Crochet Club, anyone who works with yarn is encouraged to come!

Since the club meets at lunchtime, you’re also welcome to bring your lunch and hang out as long as you like. We hope to see you there!

Free Nerf fun coming to GPL this month

GREENVILLE – Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a Nerf blaster battle at the library? Well after Friday, Sept. 19, you won’t have to wonder anymore!

Beginning at 6 p.m., kids ages 5 and up are welcome to take part in Greenville Public Library’s first Nerf Wars on Family Fun Night. Blasters and darts will be provided, so everyone is asked to leave their weapons at home.

Participants will be split by age to keep things safe. The first floor will feature stations for kids under 10 to show off their Nerf skills to earn prizes. Kids 10 and over will be on the second floor, where an all-out battle will ensue. Parents are welcome to participate with their children.

After the battle is over at 7 p.m., everyone in attendance is welcome to join us for a pizza party. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

There is a limit of 40 participants whether you’re a kid or a parent, so anyone wanting to attend needs to sign up soon! Spots are expected to fill up quickly, so call (937) 548-3915 to get your name on our list!

Check out more than just books at GPL!

GREENVILLE – Did you know you can check out more than just books at Greenville Public Library? And no, we’re not talking about movies, audiobooks, or magazines. We also offer other items such as Blu-Ray players, RocketPen Readers, Stay Sharp Kits, and a telescope!

Blu-Ray players are available to any adult with a valid library card. They will play any of the DVDs or Blu-Rays from our collection. You can check one out at the Circulation Desk for one week, however they must be returned inside and are not to be left in the Drop Box.

Our newest addition for checkout is the RocketPen Reader! These handy portable assistive scanning devices are perfect for people with reading difficulties, such as dyslexia, and language learners.

The RocketPen Readers can help in many ways, including: text-to-speech, breaking words down by syllables, spelling, definitions, and translations. They offer a large character display and can be used with ear buds for privacy when using.

To use the Reader, all you have to do is scan the word or line of text and it will do the rest. Everything you need to use the pen is included. It comes with an instructional guide, and a charging cord. Headphones and ear buds are not included.

Readers can be checked out at the Circulation Desk by asking one of our friendly librarians. They are available for three weeks, but are not eligible for renewal.

We also have our Stay Sharp Kits, which are made with senior citizens in mind. Donated by the Friends of the Library, these fun totes are themed and filled with activities that will help improve short-term memory and overall mental speed. Kits include books, puzzles, games, and more on themes such as Let’s Move!, Gardening, Handyman, and Stories.

Last, but not least, is our telescope. This item can only be checked out by an adult, and must be buckled into your car for transport. It is available for one week at a time at the Circulation Desk and cannot be renewed.

For more information on any of these items, call the library at (937) 548-3915!

GPL gets new carpeting on first floor

GREENVILLE – If you’ve been to the library lately, you’ve no doubt been aware that big changes are being made! New carpet has been installed in portions of the first floor, including the Circulation Desk area, the Holiday Book Room, the Storytime Room, and the stairs up to the second floor landing.

The library would like to thank the Coppock-Hole Trust and the Harry D. Stephens Memorial Trust for their generous donations toward making this project possible.
