“We’re thrilled to bring this inclusive show back to the Mercer County Fair again this year. Our continued collaboration with the fair allows us to provide a meaningful and memorable experience for individuals who may not typically have the opportunity to participate in a traditional show setting. We encourage everyone to come watch, there’s a special kind of joy in seeing these participants shine. It’s a fair show experience like no other!” he continued.
Those in wheelchairs are also able to participate in the show, and there is no maximum age limit to participate. There is no pre-registration for the show- just show up to the arena on the day of the show. Also, 4-H animals that are at the fair will be used– you do not need to bring an animal – just yourself!
Cara Muhlenkamp, Mercer County Fair Manager
“Our partnership with Mercer DD is one we deeply value. Their commitment to creating inclusive, meaningful experiences truly reflects the heart of our fair. ‘Share the Ring’ is a beautiful reminder that everyone belongs in the show ring – and at the Mercer County Fair.”
In addition to the Share the Ring Showmanship event, Mercer DD is excited to once again partner with the Mercer County Fair to offer both returning and new inclusive features for fairgoers!
This year, Mercer DD is introducing a Mobile Sensory Trailer, generously provided by the Hardin County Board of DD. The trailer offers a calm, welcoming space for anyone needing a sensory break during the fair. It is specifically designed for individuals with autism, anxiety, or sensory processing needs. The trailer will be located near the Commercial Building.
Mercer DD is also bringing back its accessible restroom trailer, equipped with a height-adjustable universal changing table with a safety rail, as well as a ceiling lift system that can transfer an individual from the trailer entrance directly to the table. The trailer is fully ADA-compliant, featuring a ramp, accessible toilet and sink, and ample space for companion care. It will also be located near the Commercial Building
Additionally, Fair Communication Boards will be available at Mercer DD’s booth, located just outside of the Commercial Building, near the trailers. These boards are designed to support individuals with limited or emerging verbal communication by providing visual symbols and words to help them express needs or feelings throughout the fair experience.
Shawn Thieman, Superintendent of Mercer DD
“We’re proud to continue expanding inclusive options at the Mercer County Fair each and every year. Everyone deserves the chance to fully enjoy the fair, and we’re excited to keep creating spaces and experiences where all individuals feel welcome and included.”
