What is a dairy beef feeder steer?
- A dairy beef feeder steer is a male calf from a dairy breed, usually Holstein, that has been castrated and is being raised for beef production.
They are not intended to be kept as breeding bulls or replacement heifers. They are typically purchased by individuals or groups (like 4-H or FFA members) and raised for a period of time before being sold to a feedlot for finishing. The term “feeder” indicates that they are young and not yet finished (fattened) for slaughter.
