(7-29-25) Farming can be a ‘family affair‘ in Ohio. At the Shelby County Fair in Sidney in the Dairy Beef Feeder Steer Show the top five winners were shown by cousins from Ft. Loramie.

All five are the Grandchildren of Bill and Jan Rethman from Fort Loramie.

Grand Champion – Will Rethman, Reserve Champion – Cora Bornhorst, 3rd Overall – Jack Rethman, 4th Overall – Ella Rethman and 5th Overall – Anna Rethman.

What is a dairy beef feeder steer?

  • A dairy beef feeder steer is a male calf from a dairy breed, usually Holstein, that has been castrated and is being raised for beef production. 

They are not intended to be kept as breeding bulls or replacement heifers.  They are typically purchased by individuals or groups (like 4-H or FFA members) and raised for a period of time before being sold to a feedlot for finishing.  The term “feeder” indicates that they are young and not yet finished (fattened) for slaughter.
