Celina, OHIO (7-21-25) — Mercer DD is proud to present “Unmasking the Superheroes” event on Tuesday, August 5th at 6:00PM at Brew Nation in Celina.
In partnership with The Superhero Project, an Ohio-based nonprofit initiative that uses art as a tool for healing and empowers youth impacted by developmental and physical disabilities, illnesses, and complex mental health and medical conditions. Kids and teens are interviewed about who they are beyond their diagnosis and how they want to make the world a better place. Each child is then matched with an artist who designs their heroic alter ego. This project and touring exhibit, which features 40 individuals from Mercer DD and Wyandot DD (another member of the West Central Ohio Network (WestCON COG), were made possible with support from the Ohio Arts Council.
The result? Stunning, comic-book-style portraits and character stories that capture the essence of each person in vivid, empowering detail. Now, the heroes, their families, and the entire community are invited to help unveil the posters and to meet the incredible individuals behind the characters.
Lisa Kollins, Executive Director of The Superhero Project, explains-
“The illustrations designed by our artists reflect the tremendous strength, courage and creativity of the youth we support. We’re grateful to the Ohio Arts Council for this opportunity to reach families in rural counties who may have fewer artistic experiences available to them. The impact of having your contributions to the community recognized and seeing your superhero self can be truly transformational.”
Janel Sanning, Community Relations Specialist for Mercer DD/WestCON
“The Superhero Project gives people a chance to be seen and celebrated for who they are. It’s about more than a picture. It’s about identity, storytelling, and letting our community see the strengths and brilliance in these individuals.”
Founded in 2020, The Superhero Project has worked with families, artists, schools, and disability organizations across the country and beyond to promote inclusion and self-expression through this unique storytelling collaboration.
