(6-27-25) Indiana House Bill 1008 will soon establish an Indiana-Illinois boundary adjustment commission that will begin discussing the possibility of reshaping the boundaries between the two states.

The commission will consist of six members appointed by Gov. Braun and five members from Illinois.

Indiana House Bill 1008, also known as the “Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission” bill, establishes a commission to explore the possibility of adjusting the boundary between Indiana and Illinois. This commission would investigate whether it is advisable to transfer certain Illinois counties to Indiana, particularly those that have previously voted to secede from Illinois.

In January, Illinois Rep. Brad Halbrook authored House Bill 1500, a bill centered around the creation of the “Illiana Boundary Commission,” a bill that was referred to the rules committee of the Illinois House of Representatives.

Synopsis As Introduced
Creates the Illinois-Indiana Boundary Adjustment Commission Participation Act. Provides that, if and only if House Bill 1008 of the 124th Indiana General Assembly becomes law, then, no more than 60 days after receiving a specified notice from the Governor of Indiana, the Governor shall appoint 5 members to the Illinois-Indiana Boundary Adjustment Commission. Set forth provisions concerning terms, vacancies, and reimbursement. Provide that, no later than 60 days after the completion of the Illinois-Indiana Boundary Adjustment Commission’s duties, the members appointed under the Act shall submit a report to the General Assembly. Effective immediately.

Since then, there has not been any movement on that particular bill in the Illinois General Assembly.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun (R) is a supporter of the plan to incorporate the ‘unhappy’ Indiana counties that want to leave Illinois in some form. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker sees this effort as a waste of time and effort and has no plans to support any of the attempts for the counties to move.

Pritzker announced this week he will run for a third term as Illinois Governor, despite not seeing this effort as worthwhile it will be subject of the upcoming campaign. Pritzker and the Democrats recently passed numerous taxes, their support for illegal immigrants and his attacks on President Trump will be a bump in the road for his election effort. The impact might even lose him support in the Chicago area, which usually controls who wins the governorship.

Not being willing to hold discussions will also impact the campaign for Pritzker, the majority of the counties who want to leave the state is because they are not able to impact the issues they face due to the ‘Chicago Politics‘ in place.
