In Ohio, possessing a firearm or dangerous ordnance while under disability is a third-degree felony. This means a person cannot legally acquire, have, carry, or use a firearm if they are a fugitive from justice, under indictment or convicted of a felony offense of violence or drug offense, drug dependent, a chronic alcoholic, or under adjudication of mental incompetence. A conviction carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years and a fine of up to $10,000
